Our department, Interior Room, operates within the unit Vehicle Tophat.
This department consists of seven groups covering Interior areas within mechanical, mechatronic, electronic and software perspectives.

Objective of the thesis work The digitalization of the interior room of passenger cars is growing in the form of the proliferation of various types of electronic information displays.
The in-vehicle display category with the strongest growth globally is currently HUD (Head-Up Displays), including Augmented-Reality HUDs (AR-HUD).
To find out how HUDs and AR-HUDs influence driver performance and behavior, the Display Team at Volvo Cars participates in a Vinnova-financed research project, “SCREENS II”, coordinated by RISE, which aims to find out generally how the digitalization of the driver’s environment influences driver behavior.
This Master Thesis project aims to establish the relevance of eye-tracking analysis for the purpose of assessing driver behavior in cars equipped with HUDs (and, potentially, AR-HUDs) compared to cars that are not equipped with any type of HUD but only with direct-view digital driver information display.
This will be carried out through user studies in test cars either in real traffic or on test tracks, physical measurements of display parameters and ambient lighting conditions, and analysis of eye-tracking data.
Scope of the thesis work To understand the possibilities and limitations of eye-tracking technology, installed in a real vehicle, to evaluate driver behavior and with what accuracy that can be achieved.
To demonstrate whether a difference in driver behavior can be detected using eye-tracking technology in vehicles with vs without HUD, and if so, how accurately this difference can be established.
To examine how this (potential) difference is influenced by various external parameters as well as display-optical parameters, such as.
display brightness and color-rendering, daylight vs night-time driving conditions, good vs bad weather, long vs short driving cycles, and similar circumstances.
Depending on availability.
To extend the study to AR-HUD.
What you´ll bring It is recommended that two students carry out this project together, where the combined skill set of the students is recommended to consist of the following.
Software/programming skills for eye-tracking analysis and similar Hands-on experimentation and physical/optical measurement skills Human factors/user-study skills Driver’s license is required for at least one of the students Support within these different skill sets will be provided by the Project Partners of the research project, as well as by relevant personnel within Volvo Cars.

equivalent to 30 ECTS  Number of students.
