Scope of the thesis work This assignment focuses on the design and development of a high-frequency rotor excitation system for electrically excited synchronous machines (EESMs).
The work will involve in-depth analysis and modeling of excitation systems, with particular emphasis on optimizing the frequency and efficiency of the rotor excitation process.
One will explore advanced design techniques to enhance the dynamic performance, minimize losses, and improve the reliability of the system under varying operational conditions.
The work offers the opportunity to gain practical experience in power electronics, electromagnetic field analysis, and control systems, while contributing to cutting-edge research in the field of EESM technology.
This thesis intends to investigate design topology for the rotatory transformer, which brings the excitation power from the stator side to the rotor side, alongside finding the optimal operating frequency for the same.
Further, the design of a DC-DC converter with loss estimation of the power electronic components and considering the system safety during faults scenarios.
The conclusion of the assignment should include proposal of complete high frequency excitation system for operation of EESMs.
Activities we foresee that should be done during this thesis work are.

What you´ll bring You are studying M.

Electrical Power engineering, or similar.
Understanding in Electric machines, Power electronics, finite element modelling, knowledge on materials, hands on MATLAB are highly valuable.
Duration   • The duration of this thesis work is approx.
4-5 months (full time).
• Starting date is in January , exact date to be discussed.
• 30 ECTS   • This thesis work will be conducted at Volvo Cars Gothenburg.
• This thesis work is to be conducted by 1 or 2 students.
• Office, computer and software will be organized by Volvo Cars,  in close co-operation with your university.
