Vehicle Tophat is one of six development units within Engineering (R&D) at Volvo Cars where the teams develop state of-the-art Interior and Exterior.

Within our team of over 800 engineers at Vehicle Tophat, we are offering a broad range of master thesis projects.
Perceived Quality (PQ) is an attribute area within the department Vehicle Tophat.
The department is responsible for developing solutions for interior and exterior hardware and software.
PQ is a shared service within Vehicle Tophat and consists of five sub attributes - Geometry, Material, Illumination, Paint and Surface Finish.
Perceived Quality is a major enabler for Volvo Cars since everything the customer experiences influences the overall perception of our brand and who we are.
To secure a successful product in line with the Volvo Cars brand values, it is of vital importance in the development process to understand the customer as their needs sets the scope for requirements and requirement levels.
One of the most vital areas for PQ is the visibility aspect, which is related to what the customer visually interacts with when in contact with the product.
By having more underlying data on user behavior with focus on visible interaction, prioritization and decision-making can be facilitated and target levels can be better optimized both from cost- and customer perspective.
Objective This project is part of a larger project that will focus on how to represent visual interaction data in 3D collected from different use cases.
Here, the focus lies on understanding how exposed the interior surfaces are for the user.
The objective with this master thesis project is to develop supportive functionality, with the use of VR- and eye-tracking technology, that can generate virtual car interior classification areas based on user data.
Scope of the thesis work This thesis focuses on how to utilize a combination of AR/VR position data with eye-tracking gaze data to generate surface classification.
The project builds on a previous develop solution for virtual gaze clustering and 3D visualization.
The thesis project includes the following steps.
Refine current available 3D eye-tracking data functionality using, VARJO VR, Hololens and Unity Develop solution for 3D visualization of eye-position data and gaze direction Develop solution for how to color-map interior surfaces based on eye-tracking and HMD gaze-direction data.
Data collection – Design experiment and collect data from user studies.
Classification proposal generic – Proposal of a generic classification that applies the all-car interiors Classification proposal unique – Proposal of an automated process for generating unique classification based  on design releases and available user data.
Generate a solution for presenting the collected data in a comprehensive way to support the product  development process.
What you´ll bring We are looking for students with the following profiles.
Highly analytic and a drive to succeed in what you set out to accomplish.
You should have a genuine interest  in computer graphics, virtual visualization and AR/VR.
Master’s degree students in.
Computer Science, Computer Graphics, Engineering Mathematics and  Computational Science, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
Programming skills are required (C# valuable).
Experience in Unity (incl.
AR/VR functionallity) is required, as well as knowledge in eye-tracking techniques.
This thesis project requires that you are on site at office in Volvo Cars Gothenburg.

20th January to 27 th of June (dates can be flexible with +/- 7  days) Academic credits.
equivalent to 30 ECTS  Number of students.
