Vehicle Tophat is one of six development units within Engineering (R&D) at Volvo Cars where the teams develop state-of-the-art Interior and Exterior.

Occupant safety is responsible for developing the latest tailored restraints systems in Volvo Cars.
This includes airbags, seat belts, steering wheels and child safety systems that has a vast interface throughout the vehicle.
Our purpose is to save lives in event of an accident and our vision is zero injuries.

Scope of the thesis work Project #1.
Conceptual evaluation of a standardized Curtain Airbag Interface Background.
Currently there is no standardized interface how to attach a Curtain Airbag (CAB) to the vehicle car body(Body in White - BiW).
This results in extra work for every project with risks of introducing potential issues.
Objectives.
Definition of critical needs of and CAB / BiW interface.
Benchmark solution from within Volvo and other solutions on the market.
Develop a conceptual solution with initial physical prototypes for a standardized interface.
Qualifications.
2 student Master students in Product Development, CAD/CAE and engineering methods   Project #2.
Inflated Structures ability to create structural stiffness   Background.
The Far side airbag is the latest type of airbag introduced for side collisions.
It aims to restrain first row occupants from interaction with each other and avoid contact to intruding structure when the vehicle is struck from the distal side.
Today many of concept’s rely on a well-defined tunnels console structure between the front seats.
In future vehicles such support surfaces may not be available and new approaches are needed.
Objectives.
Develop a concept design of inflatable structure capable of high loads despite limited amount of supporting surfaces and fixation points.
Qualifications.
master students in Product development or mechanical/Physics, CAD/CAE.
Project #3 Assessment of Airbag / windscreen interaction with stereo camera  Background.
The passenger airbag needs the windscreen as a support surface both during deployment and when the occupant loads into the airbag later in the crash sequence.
If the system is designed incorrectly too large forces can be transferred to the windscreen during deployment resulting in windscreen breakage and loss of support for the airbag in the crash.
To evaluate airbag / windscreen interaction in early project phases a 3D vision method (ARAMIS) has been developed that can measure e.
.
strains in the windscreen during the airbag deployment.
Currently this method is dependent on manual data transfer between different data sources that is very time consuming and increasing risk of introduction of errors.
Objective.
Automate data transfer activities using Python, Matlab or similar.
Convert data to relevant physical parameters like deformation, deformation speed, curvature etc.
Automize to the extent possible analysis of the data.
Assess current method to find potential improvements through performed tests and if necessary new tests, can a better predictor for windscreen failure be found? Qualification.
