The ESG Controller is a key role within the Planning and Control Department at Telefónica, responsible for overseeing the definition, collection, analysis, monitoring and reporting of financial KPIs associated to Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) in line with the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).
This role is created to ensuring that our company meets regulatory requirements, as a supporting area to both Sustainability and Accountability corporate team through its commitment to generate a robust financial and non-financial reporting.
The ESG Controller will work and collaborate closely with sustainability and accountability, within the processes of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) definition and calculation; capacitation of global & local operational teams involved in financial ESG KPIs and resources reporting process to guarantee its traceability; upload of CSRD data related to a proper reporting system and, finally, audit verification attention according to SOX standards.
This role must have a complete integration with the Strategic Planning team, to support them in the consolidation of projected financial ESG resources and CSRD KPIs included in Action Plans.
Key Responsibilities.
Financial Control & Analysis.
Develop, consolidate, and monitor financial KPIs related to the ESG across various business units and geographical regions, ensuring alignment with Telefónica’s corporate sustainability goals and regulatory standards.
Data Collection & Management.
Coordinate the collection of financial ESG data across departments, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and compliance with CSRD and other relevant frameworks.
Develop and maintain robust systems and databases for tracking and managing ESG-related financial and operational data.
Ensure that data collection processes are streamlined and integrated into existing financial and operational reporting structures.
Support local & global teams involved in ESG/CSRD reporting process to guarantee data traceability.
Reporting & Monitoring.
Support Accounting and Sustainability areas in the financial ESG/CSRD data upload process.
Prepare reports and presentations to senior management, highlighting key insights.
Ensure that all ESG reporting meets internal standards and external regulatory requirements, particularly in relation to the CSRD.
Compliance & Risk Management.
Ensure compliance with CSRD and other relevant regulations, identifying and mitigating risks related to ESG reporting and resource allocation.
Collaborate with internal and external auditors to support financial ESG-related audits and reviews, addressing any findings and implementing corrective measures as needed.
Serve as the primary point of contact for internal and external auditors during financial ESG-related audits, providing necessary documentation, explanations related to ESG/CSRD KPIs and resources.
Facilitate the audit process by coordinating with various departments to ensure timely and accurate responses to audit inquiries.
Stay updated on regulatory changes and best practices in ESG reporting and integrate them into Telefónica’s control processes.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement.
Work closely with Sustainability, Accountability, and Operational teams to ensure financial ESG data is traceable and accurately captured and aligned with corporate objectives.
Engage with internal stakeholders to communicate the financial implications of ESG initiatives and ensure buy-in for sustainability strategies.
Support external communication of Telefónica’s ESG performance, including participation in investor relations and corporate reporting activities.
Qualifications.
Education.
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Engineering or a related field.
Professional certifications or coursework in ESG reporting or sustainability are a plus.
Experience.
5+ years of experience in financial control, planning, or auditing, ideally within a large corporate environment.
Strong experience with ESG reporting, sustainability metrics, or non-financial reporting, particularly within a regulatory context.
Familiarity with CSRD, GRI, SASB, or similar ESG reporting frameworks.
Skills.
High-level fluency in English and Spanish is required.
Advanced proficiency in financial analysis tools and software (e.
.
Excel, SAP, Power BI).
Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex financial and non-financial data.
Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly to senior management.
Strong project management skills, with a focus on process improvement and efficiency.
Ability to work collaboratively across departments in a fast-paced environment.
